As someone who gets genuinely weak at the knees over clever automotive engineering, I have spent years admiring Polestar’s quiet evolution. I loved the muscular, crisp design language of the Polestar 2 fastback. However, its cabin was a tad too snug and its rides a bit overly firm.

When the Polestar 4 SUV landed, I was eager to see if Gothenburg had managed to bottle that sharp Scandinavian magic, stretch it out, and smooth off the rough edges. Spoiler alert: they’ve done far more than that. According to Polestar Global, this creation bridges the gap between sports car dynamism and genuine SUV utility, making it one properly intriguing machine.

Exteriors: Sports Car Nose, SUV Stance

Walking up to the Polestar 4 SUV, the first thing that strikes you is its stance. It isn’t a slab-sided, boxy visual monolith like traditional luxury SUVs. Instead, it looks like a low-slung, athletic crossbreed. It trades the squarer, upright proportions of the older Polestar 2 for a dramatically sleeker front end, featuring razor-sharp, split ‘Dual Blade’ LED headlights that look straight off a concept vehicle. It has flush glazing and pop-out door handles that sit flush against the bodywork to cut through aerodynamic drag. 

The silhouette features roof rails that lend straight, intentional lines to the upper profile while adding actual usability for extra gear. Down below, the car is fitted with massive forged performance wheels hugging giant golden Brembo brake callipers.

And then you walk around to the back. Look closely at the rear glass, and you’ll realise that despite its low, tapering roofline, it maintains full glass visibility and a massive boot aperture, sporting a clean, full-width LED light bar that looks brilliantly futuristic at dusk.

Interior: The Lounge Experience

Stepping inside is like entering a high-end Scandinavian architecture firm, minus the pretentious coffee. The Polestar 4 SUV feels positively vast.

The minimalism is striking. The interior comprises optional Tailored Knit upholstery (made from 89% recycled PET waste) alongside traceable, animal-welfare-secured Nappa Leather supplied by Bridge of Weir. It feels tactile, modern, and light-years ahead of old-school heavy hides. 

Overhead, the optional electrochromic panoramic glass roof is a brilliant party trick. At the tap of a screen, you can transition the glass from fully transparent to completely opaque (or a combination of both) to block out harsh sunlight.

When it comes to hauling actual gear, practicality is impressive:

• 530 Litres: Plenty of space for a full set of family suitcases under the parcel shelf.
• 655 Litres: Load straight up to the roofline without worrying about blocking a traditional mirror, thanks to the high-definition digital rear-view mirror system.
• 1,665 Litres: Fold the rear seats down completely, and you unlock a cavernous flat floor capable of swallowing flat-pack furniture or serious expedition kit.

At night, the solar-system-inspired interior ambient lighting casts an orbital line of light around the cabin, with nine selectable planetary colour themes that give evening drives a relaxing, ethereal vibe.

Propulsion: Devastating Electric Thrust

Underneath the sleek bodywork sits Geely’s SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) electric platform operating on a 400 V battery architecture, paired with a massive 102 kWh (gross) battery pack.

The Dual Motor performance configuration produces up to 400 kW (544 hp) and 686 Nm of torque.

Slamming the accelerator pedal in Performance mode doesn’t just push you back in your seat; it temporarily recalibrates your internal organs. It rockets from 0–100 km/h in a mere 3.9 seconds. For context, the older Polestar 2 Dual Motor took around 4.2 to 4.4 seconds. When it’s time to top up, the 200 kW DC fast-charging capacity hooks up to a rapid charger and takes the battery from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes, giving you just enough time to grab an espresso and answer a couple of emails.

Ride and Handling: A True Driver’s EV

How does all that electric firepower translate to a twisty road? Exceptionally well. The Polestar 2 always had plenty of grip, but its steel-spring setup could feel brutally stiff over broken urban surfaces. The Polestar 4 SUV fixes this with a far more sophisticated, adaptive chassis setup. Around town, it glides over pot-holed asphalt with remarkable poise, isolating the cabin from harsh impacts without ever feeling floaty.

Toss it into a series of tight S-bends, and the sports car DNA promised by Polestar shines through. The steering is sharp, weighted perfectly, and communicates surprisingly well for an electric SUV. Turn-in is crisp, and thanks to the wide track, low centre of gravity, and high-performance Brembo brakes, body roll is virtually non-existent. You can carry tremendous speed through corners with absolute confidence, using the all-wheel-drive system to shoot out of bends like a stone out of a slingshot.

Safety and Technology: Smart, Seamless, and Safe

It wouldn’t be a Swedish-engineered vehicle without cutting-edge safety and silicon. Polestar’s infotainment system is built on Android Automotive OS, accessed through a crisp 15.4-inch landscape central display.

The headline act here is the integration of Google with Gemini built-in, allowing you to control climate settings, route planning, and media using plain, natural conversation. Simply saying “Hey Google, I’m a bit chilly” smoothly adjusts the dual-zone climate control without taking your eyes off the tarmac.

On the safety front, the Polestar 4 SUV uses a suite of external cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors to create an invisible safety shield around the vehicle. The digital rear-view mirror displays an ultra-wide, high-definition feed from the rear roof camera, offering a crystal-clear view behind you that remains completely unobstructed even if you’ve packed the 655-litre boot right up to the headliner.

The New Benchmark for Electric SUVs?

The Polestar 4 SUV isn’t just an incremental step forward for the brand. It’s a massive leap. It takes the sharp design aesthetic, eco-conscious philosophy, and blistering speed that made early Polestars fan favourites, and marries them to genuine interior space, high-tech luxury, and a refined ride.

If you want a cookie-cutter family hauler, look elsewhere. But if you’re a driving enthusiast who needs real practicality, demands cutting-edge interior tech, and appreciates deliberate Scandinavian design, the Polestar 4 SUV stands out as one of the most exciting, well-rounded EVs on the road today.
